World Local Government Climate Summit 2025

From April 14-16, 2025, the World Local Government Climate Summit took place at KINTEX, Goyang City, Republic of Korea, organized by Gyeonggi-do province in collaboration with ICLEI and ICLEI Korea. The event focused on the urgent climate crisis, highlighting innovative science-based solutions and strategies for inclusive local governance aimed at achieving a “Science-based Green Transition for All.”

One of the event’s key sessions was “Science-based Solutions: AI and data-driven solutions, MRV systems”, where Theodora Panagea represented the Dryads Project, funded by ICLEI Europe with support from Google.org, alongside leading international climate and technology specialists. The session explored various AI and data-driven methods that local governments can adopt to tackle climate challenges, enhance transparency through accurate data, and improve the efficiency of environmental protection measures. Theodora Panagea specifically highlighted how Artificial Intelligence (AI) developed in the Dryads Project can significantly improve early wildfire detection, effectively monitor illegal waste sites, and precisely forecast wildfire progression through sophisticated simulations.

The Summit concluded with over 1,500 participants from 44 countries, including 30 mayors and senior officials, as well as 11 deputy mayors. Together, they called for faster climate action, stronger access to finance, and the full recognition of local and regional governments as climate actors in their own right.
